Since 1978, DEMCO has sponsored an annual essay contest for high school juniors.
Customarily the prize for the winners is an all-expense-paid trip to participate in the Rural Electric Youth Tour in Washington, D.C. The 2022 trip is tentatively scheduled June 17-24, but may be canceled due to COVID-19. That determination will be made by the NRECA well in advance of the event.
If the trip is canceled, the prize is still worth competing for!
Twelve 11th grade students will be selected to give an oral presentation of their essay in a remote format to judges, and four winners will receive a $2,000 scholarship award, comparable to the value of the customary trip to D.C.
To qualify, 11th grade students must enter the DEMCO Essay Contest between November 1, 2021 and January 21, 2022.
Throughout the submission and award process, there are many learning opportunities for participating students to gain a better understanding of the functionality of electrical cooperatives as well as insight into how their national government operates.
*Customarily the reward for the winners is a free pass to the NRECA Rural Electric Youth Tour in Washington, D.C. Unfortunately this year’s trip has been cancelled and the prize is a comparable scholarship to the four winners selected.
